The East Fallowfield Community Park Rain Garden Project was designed to raise awareness among our residents about the role that rain gardens can play in protecting the watershed from effects of stormwater runoff and nonpoint source pollution.

What are Rain Gardens?
Rain gardens are simply shallow depressions in the landscape that are naturally present or dug by the homeowner and planted with native perennials, shrubs and trees. They are designed to capture rain water where it falls to reduce the amount of pollutants that enter our streams. Rain gardens help to make sure our families will have enough clean drinking water now and for generations yet to come.

Ordinarily, stormwater gets diverted from rooftops down into drain spouts and flows off driveways, streets and parking lots into storm sewers, eventually ending up in our rivers and streams. This runoff can cause road damage, local flooding, streambank erosion and water pollution. A rain garden is a way to capture rainwater, slow it down and spread it out before it can cause problems downstream. It recharges groundwater, naturally filters pollutants and makes a beautiful, low maintenance landscape feature. It provides food and habitat for birds and butterflies. Any size of rain garden - even a small one - will make a significant difference to your drinking water and the health of the Buck and Doe watersheds, the Brandywine Valley watershed and the Delaware River Estuary.

How You Can Help
Residents can do their part for clean water and create beautiful rain gardens at their homes. Check out our Resources page for more information about how to get started! Contact Brian Carling (parks@eastfallowfield.org), Chair of the Park & Recreation Commission if you would like to help care for the rain gardens in the park.Resources.htmlmailto:parks@eastfallowfield.org?subject=mailto:parks@eastfallowfield.org?subject=rain%20gardensshapeimage_5_link_0shapeimage_5_link_1
